Travel Forums Africa and The Middle East egyptian itinerary

Im travelling in europe this summer with a week detour in egypt. I have 7 days to explore egypt and would like some help creating an itinerary. Rough plan is to hit cairo and luxor i figure it is all i have time for, would like to go to alexandria but wondering if making time in a tight schedule would be worth it. main things i want to see would be pyramids, egyptian museum, valley of kings, luxor temple...is there some must sees im missing, outside of these.

ps. is it possible to do pyramids and musuem in the same day, ie: early morning to pyramids then museum in afternoon/early evening?

It is possible, but I don't recommend it at all. You'll be tired from walking all over the site of the Pyramids, when you are finished there you'll want a late lunch and sitting in the shade. I would combine a visit to the Pyramids with a souvenier shopping trip to Khan El-Khalili, the Old City in Cairo. All guides say that you need a full day for the Egyptian museum and they are damn right.

BTW, I took the night train from Luxor to Cairo. It arrived at 5 am and this was just in time to take a taxi to the hostel, drop my stuff there and jump on a minibus heading in the direction of the Pyramids. I was there around 6:30, perfect before things got too crowded or the heat too much to bear.

Lucc12,
I completely agree with t_maia about combining the trip the Pyramids and Khan-El-Khalili on the same day. That is a very smart idea. Pick and choose what you want to see at the Egyptian Museum in Cairo. My personal favorites in the museum were the treasury of Tutankamun, the ancient egyptian jewelry section (which I never imagined I would actually like) and the Royal Mummies (there is an extra fee for this). In Cairo, I would also recommend visiting Islamic Cairo (Citadelle etc.) and Coptic Cairo. Give yourself 2 full days in Luxor. Do Karnak temple as early in the morning as possible. It is not much fun when it gets hot by mid-day. Hope this helps.

thanks everyone, that helps alot. One more thing tho, is it possible to do a day trip to alexandria, or would you need to stay a night there in order for it to be worth it??

Hey there,

It is possible make it from Cairo to Alexandria and back in a day but depending on how you get there you may not have much time to see anything.

We took the train (really good and cheap) and spent one night there. Arrived first thing in the morning, left the luggage at the hotel while we visited the city sights and the Castle etc for the whole day before checking into the hotel. Next day, up early for a trip out to El Alamein (approx 110kms west of Alex - 1.5 hour drive) to visit the WWII graves and museum (I'm from NZ you see and the Kiwis fought out there with the other Allies) and back for late lunch and train back to Cairo. If you were to visit only for the day (depending on your transport choice) you will probably have to select just a few major sites to visit as you may not have time for all of them.

Re your original post "ps. is it possible to do pyramids and musuem in the same day, ie: early morning to pyramids then museum in afternoon/early evening?". Very possible. I used to run tours with the following schedule: Museum the minute it opens for approx 2hrs, out to the Pyramids before it gets too hot for a couple of hours, Papyrus Museum, Perfumery and be back at the hotel by 4. Chill for a bit before catching the overnight train to Aswan (which used to depart at 10pm ish). Its a full-on day but that means you will sleep well on the very long train ride! :)

With only 7 days you probably won't have time for the Red Sea beaches - maybe leave that for next time!?!

Hope that helps and good luck.
