Hi!

I booked some accomodation today for my trip and my travel agent suggested Maze Backpackers in Sydney, insisting it was a good deal and it's popular and a good hostel. I went ahead and booked 3 nights which cost £93, however when i got home I thought i'd check out their website and see what they're like. After reading about a gazillion reviews it seems everyone thinks it is a total dive. Literally 90% of reviews out of 74 were very bad! Have any of you stayed there? What are your thoughts?

I stayed at the Maze Backpackers a couple of years ago. And I would agree it was pretty bad. I had a private room with ensuite so I can comment on the dorms but everything seemed very basic. It was noisy, quite dirty and needed some renovations. However it is in a good location - within walking distance of Darling Harbour and Circular Quay. £93 seems like a lot to pay for three nights accommodation, was this for a dorm or single room?
I would recommend either Wake Up or Base Backpackers. A dorm bed for a night should cost less an A$40 per night.

Unfortunately travel agents will usually suggest/recommend the properties that pay the highest commission. STA for example only works with properties that are willing to give them 20%+ commission. A lot of hostels can't afford that, even though they might be really good hostels so they just aren't available through travel agents, unless the travel agent just uses a system like the one we have here on Travellerspoint but then their commissions take a HUGE nose dive.

Anyway, I've never stayed at Maze, but walked outside it many times and it didn't look too promising; sorry :( It's got a great location, but so do Wake Up and Base that chemgal recommended. The Sydney Central YHA is also right around the corner and a really nice place to stay. Especially if this is for your first few nights, I'd really recommend it along with Wake Up & Base. Wake Up is the highest rated hostel in the city. Can you get a refund? Online hostel bookings usually don't offer this on the deposit you pay (only 10%, the rest you pay on arrival), but if the travel agent hasn't yet forwarded your booking it might be okay.

I stayed at Maze in 2004, yeah it was a bit of a dump, but it's not as bad as some hostels I've stayed in. If I remember right, it was cheaper than some of the other hostels in Sydney and that was why I stayed there. There was a good crowd of people there, but I guess it all depends on what you want from a hostel?
