I'm sincerely feeling like an idiot right about now. Despite my searching both the web and my brain I can't figure out what "s/d" means in the Lonely Planet books when discussing price of hostels. "S" is always cheaper, so I'm really stumped. I looked at both the back and the front of the book, and searched their website. Someone help me and if you know where a list of all their abbreviations is, I would much appreciate it.
single/double. (With dm for dorm, and tr for triple.)
Also, in modern Lonely Planets (e.g. from the last three years), the list of abbreviations is right in the top left corner of the inside front cover, under "how to use this book". Before that it was listed under "Text symbols" on the same page. And I can't quickly find where this information was listed in even older LPs.

Simple and obvious, just like I knew it would be once someone told me.
