Hi,

Which cheap airliners do this route and what is the usual price to pay?

Also, is it best to book in advance from the UK or wait untill we get to hong kong?

Thanks in advance,

Simon

Airlines doing this route are Cathay Pacific, China Airlines, Ethiopian Airlines, Kenya Airways, Orient Thai Airliens, Pakistan International Airlines, Sri Lankan Airlines, Emirates Airlines, Hong Kong Express Airways, Royal Jordanian Airlines, Thai International Airways. These are not low cost airlines but:

From the 15th of May there will be Air Asia flights from Hongkong to Bangkok. If you want to fly there earlier than this day than Air Asia has direct flights from Macau to Bangkok. Macau is a short ferry ride from HK and you might just visit this city for a day before leaving.

For half May I found prices of 56 euro (about 45 GBP) from Macau to Bangkok, including taxes etc. If you want the cheapest prices, it is best to book in advance, although for the 20th of April is noticed that the price difference was only about 10-15 GBP. For september I saw prices which were even 10 GBP cheaper than May. So difference are not that big, but still best to book in advance.

As Utrecht mentioned, you may also want to look at flying from Macau - although fewer airlines fly there, I believe the airport has lower fees for airlines which usually means lower airfares. The Hong Kong-Macau ferry operates 24 hours a day, and during the day fairly frequently. The lowest fare is HKD134 (just under £10).

The new AirAsia route is actually Kuala Lumpur - Hong Kong.

Ok, that's odd, although wiki maybe has not been updated. I checked AirAsia.com which only noted KL-HK like you mentioned.

From wiki: There will be more new route in 2008, which will include routes to India and China: [16][17]

Hangzhou (via AirAsia X, starts from 4 Feb 2008))
Ho Chi Minh City (Starts in 15 Apr 2008)
Hong Kong (from Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok and Kota Kinabalu, starting in 15 May 2008)
Haikou (starts in 22 May 2008)
Kuantan (starts in June 2008)
Guilin (starts in July 2008)
Tiruchirapalli, India (starts in October 2008)

Don't forget that if you're coming from the UK, if you book Cathay Pacific to Bangkok, they give you a free stopover in Hong Kong (all long haul flights via Cathay transit Hong Kong).
