Is the pass through the andes passable during the months of june july and august?? how is the road, i'm going to have a fully loaded dodge sprinter van (5 cylanders) am i going to have a problem climbing up the steep grades??

I am going this winter from Mendonza to Santiago on a CrossFox and I am sure that its possible...

Its the main route to Santiago from Argentina I belive. I reckon they woudl put in a fair bit of effort to keep it free of snow. Its probably just an issue of maybe convoy driving, and using chains.

Cross Fox is a car and not an animal :) I think you can do it without the chains...

Id check up on the chains. Its a high mountain pass, and you drive through a couple of ski resorts. I remember seeing signs saying chains where compulsory, but might not be the case for 4wd. I woudlnt do it though on slick summer tires up there in winter...

Most of the time during winter they manage to keep this road open but it is not alwasy possible. Crossed this pass july 2007. Heavy snowfall caused the pass to be closed for 2 days, then they opened the pass only for the cars and busses (trucks had to wait still) with chains (which we defenitely needed!!!). Just after we ´d passed, the road was closed again due to more heavy snowfall.
