Hear ya Watchdog, but personally I don't hope so. apart from being not safe, the area is particularly interesting for us nature lovers, which we as travellers are all of course..

It's all politics-the technology is there but the political will to make it happen isn't-and when political will is applied money will appear.

The boat route around the Darien Gap is an excellent trip, if you can still do it. In 1967 I got an open boat from Turbo, Columbia, to the border at Puerto Obaldia. Actually they dropped us (myself, my first wife, and a German who was bicycling around the world) on a beach on the Columbia side of the border and we walked into Panama. The next day we got on a boat run by the Kuna indians who live on the San Blas Islands. Four days to Colon with many stops. We traded some of my first wife's costume jewelry for a mola, ate turtle eggs and probably some sea turtle (they weren't protected back then and catching them seemed to be a major business for the Kuna).
