If you are still having troubles getting in to those bigger hostels for the dates you want you may want to try the wilderness hostels along the Icefields Parkway, they are still HI-Hostels and meet HI-standards for rustic accommodations. Check Out this this one very close to Lake Louise (29km) close- Close for Canadian Rockies Standard that is, Canada is a big place.
these are favorites among the locals seeking to escape the throngs of tourists in Banff and Lake Louise
As for hostelworld.com it is a third party reseller of hostel beds and we the individual hostels provide them with a limited number of hostel beds to sell as they take a 10% cut of our bed rate so what you are seeing at the hostelworld site is that
they have sold out of their beds that the hostels have allotted to them. As you may know it is always cheaper to go directly to the source when booking your beds, HI hostels in Canada and that would be www.hihostels.ca
Just remember that it is a long weekend in Canada Aug 31- Sept 1 (Labour Day) and everything gets booked up very quickly around that weekend as it is the last weekend the kids are out of school.
if you can't get the dates you want in the order you wish, you may also try flipping you itinerary backwards and start with Jasper and drive down to Lake Louise.
If you are not planning to drive you may want to try this service.
Hope this helps a bit
cheers for info mark, should hopefully get me sorted. might see you in sept!
