Hello,

I'm planning on taking a trip round Europe and prehaps including Egypt next summer for aprox 6 weeks, hopefully will be going with my best friend. My budget will be around £2,600 and i would really appreciate help on where i should start, what main places to visit, and general business on how to go about it. Basically i'm very new to this, but am a quick learner and this is something i've always wanted to do.

Any replies would be greatful, thankyou!

6 weeks for Europe plus Egypt? Forget it. As a rule of thumb you need to plan on spending at least 2 weeks per country in Europe, for some countries you need more time (3-4 weeks).

I could easily see you travelling around Egypt and Israel in 6 weeks, but 6 weeks for Europe is impossible. You need to pick 2-3 countries and focus on them. If you don't your trip will be totally stop-whistle allowing you no more than a day for some cities where normal tourists spent 4-5 days.

As for planning, head to a large bookstore with a good travel section and have a look around. Get a good guidebook intended for independent travel. Look for the series Let's Go, Rough Guide, Lonely Planet, etc.

The difficulty with going in summer is that there are very few cheap flights.

This is especially true if you want to go to Egypt. The best time to go to Egypt would be in winter when there are cheap flights to be had and the heat is not so bad.

The only cheap flights from the UK to Europe go east in summer. Germany, Poland, Latvia, etc. From a certain point on there are almost no flights going south because they are all booked out. Consider this in your planning.

Have you decided yet on your style of travel? Hostel and public transport or car and tent? Or maybe bicycle? Eating out or self-catering? Sun, beach and party or culture; cities or nature?

I think that 6 weeks is a considerable amount of time, and unless you want to see every corner of europe it should be enough to get a general impression if you have never been there. It sounds to me like that's what you're after, something general. What places would you like to see? Like t_maia says you should pick a few countries, as 6 weeks won't be enough to get a general impression from the whole continent lol.
I'm not sure about Egypt, but the two things you are relating don't have that much in common, I think you should stick to either Europe or Ehypt and its neighbour countries.

First of all - where do you come from?
If your budget is inc. travelling to your destination you're on a tight one, although it's not impossible.

I am planning a similar trip myself, but around the US, in a couple of years time - and I need some advice with that too (because I am from the UK and have never been to the US.)

My advice to you is do some research.
Research places you can stay, places you can visit for cheap, maybe even people who are in the same situation with you, the more people you meet the more easier it'll be to travel around. I'm not saying make friends with a stranger and you can sponge of them, all I'm saying is you could do your trip a lot easier by socialising.

Another thing is language. Many languages are in Europe, not just one like other places. I suggest you brush up on basic German, Spanish, and French. These are quite popular languages, following English which I guess you'd be alright with. Everyone tries to learn English because of tourism.

I could probably give you loads more advice if you gave me some other details about your trip.
If you need any more help feel free to ask. I've been to a few places in Europe so I guess that could help :-)

Cally,

You can book your flight to Europe from Easy Jet and Ryan Air which have their base in Great Britain. They offer extensive cheap flights to almost every part of Europe. Try different flight combinations to save money.

There is a helpful guide at http://www.consumerwebguide.com/TravelTips/Travel-Europe-How-to-Travel-Europe-on-a-Cheap-Budget.html . Hope it helps!:)
