moutallica has indicated that this thread is about Australia

Im sorry if this is such a newbie question, but i'm going to australia in november for a year (there is also a chance that I will go to asia and/or south america on the way back) and I need to know what to bring. What kind of pack should I get? Should I bring a tent and some basic camping supplies with me? What other important things is there that i might forget?

Thank you for your help.

Hi,
I'd think carefully about taking camping gear. If you really want to camp, then there's no choice, but buy what you haven't already got when you get to Australia. Saves you carrying it al the way and prices will be similar I think.
Otherwise, ditch the tent and stay in hostels. Makes your pack a lot lighter

Personally I would recommend staying in hostels over camping as well. Camping equipment will eat up a lot of space in your backpack, and also hostels are right in the centre of the big cities, whereas campsites are on the outskirts, which is less convenient.

I took an 85 litre backpack and a small daybag when I went to Oz, but I could probably have managed with a 65 litre backpack.
