We didn't go to Caracas but didn't hear great things from people that did....have heard it's very dodgy but I'm sure you could go there and be careful.

When we arrived in Porlamar, Isla Margarita it was late and the area we were going to stay in (near Plaza Bolivar) didn't look safe at all so we stayed in the more expensive part of town. The locals told us we shouldn't walk past Plaza Bolivar after dark because it's not safe!
Pampatar was a small town nearby and that felt OK but not much to do there and unfortunately, to get a bus to other parts of the island you have to go through Porlamar (personally I'd still rather stay outside of Porlamar but that's just me).

We didn't have any problems in Venezuela but we did get a lot of warnings from locals around the Caribbean Coast so take care if you do go.

Merida felt much safer and was really nice

Just a thought....If you're looking for nice Caribbean coast you could go to Colombia. We were at Parque Nacional Tayrona a couple of weeks ago and it was lovely
