Once i get an answer to this query, i think im gonna feel so silly asking but here goes.
When you are out there travelling in the big wide world, you arrive at a destination (hostel/whatever), you dump your stuff whereever you are sleeping/staying and then you decide to go out and explore.
What/how do you ensure your backpack is safe when you are out and about?
I know about taking a day pack with you and also the ins and outs of valuables, etc but what about your pack?
I just leave it where I am staying.
If you are staying in a private room then the only people who would have access to it are people who work there. I have never had a problem leaving things in my room. I have even left valuables in my bag (well hidden) and have never had anything stolen.
If you are staying at a hostel in dorm style rooms, they often have a "locker" that you can leave your stuff in.
I suppose there's just a certain about of trust you have to have when you're out 'n about. Get a good look at whose staying in your room and if one of 'em is shady looking then leave your pack with a clerk. But I don't think someone one steal a whole pack. Who wants to lug a heavy bag a dirty laundry around?? They'd probably be more likely to just rummage through it at take the valuble things that you shouldn't have left in there.
I understand what you're saying. Does that make me silly as well?
But in reality, I bet they are equally worried/suspicious about me as much as I am about them. I guess most people just want a place to bunk in.
I get tired of locking and unlocking my pack after awhile and I usually just leave everything just there and take what's important with me. I haven't had any bad experience before (yet!).
I agree that a certain amount of trust has to be there.
You just can't worry too much when you're travelling.
I think the more you travel, the more you'll feel comfortable with leaving things there as it is. Locking and unlocking is really tedious.
Many hostels have a "locker room" in which you can lock up your bag for a little extra cash. Still, the best advice is just to take your important stuff in a daypack and leave your big backpack. I've done that for years and have never had a problem. I suppose there are some people out there who would take advantage of that, but I haven't encountered anyone yet.
for me its simple, leave the bag at the hostel, i try not to bring anything valuable, the most being my travellers cheques which are insured or my camera which is normally attached to my arm like glue...... anything i pick up on the way as pressies etc i try to send back home ahead of me, saves carrying them,.......
Cheers everyone for your replies.
It looks like its a case of locking it away (if in a dorm) or just leaving it in the room (if in a private), providing you can lockaway securely.
The bottom line is obviously to take valuables with you, passport/money/visas/etc on your body and then water/maps/whatever/etc in your daypack.
