My two friends and I have booked our tickets and we are heading for Bangkok on 17th Jan 2009!
We are planning on heading to Bangkok - Singapore - Bali - Australia - Fiji - LA - London for between 6-8 months.
If anyone has any advice on places to go in Thailand we want to do the temples, places of interest and of course the beaches and the best way to travel we would be most grateful.
Thank you in advance!
P.S - Any advice on the other countries we are travelling to would be welcome also but wasn't sure if had to write that in a different section??
Depending on how long you are going for, the standard first time trip to Thailand includes visits to:
Bangkok - see the Grand Palace, Wat Pho, Floating markets, and hang out on Khao San Road.
Chiang Mai - visit temples, do a jungle trek to hill tribe villages, and take a cooking course
Ayathaya - ancient capital temple town
Islands and beaches - So many to choose from but a very quick run down on them:
Quiet chillaxing islands: Koh Lanta and Koh Tao
Full-on out of control tourism: Phuket, Koh Samui, Koh Phi Phi and Pattaya
Somewhere in the middle: Krabi and Koh Phagnan. I haven't been to Chang or Samet yet, but I suspect they also fit into this category.
If you have more than a couple weeks in Thailand you can also consider visiting Pai, Chaing Rai, Soukathai and Kanchanaburi.
Getting around is easy. You can take public buses and trains by going to stations and buying tickets. Or you can head to a travel agent and book a tourist VIP bus that go everywhere tourists go. These are often very cheap and will take care of everything for you like ferries transfers and often pick you up at your hotel. People often report scams and theft on these buses and feel that taking tourist buses isolates you from the real Thailand (fair argument I think), but I've taken them probably 20 times, have never been ripped off or stolen from and my only complaint is that they always show the absolute worst movies you can imagine.
Thank you for taking the time to reply, this sounds great,
We have allocated 2.5 months in Thailand down to Singapore so hopefully we can take in the majority of what you have suggested!
