Most backapcker places in London are average at best.

There are a few around Earls Court which is a safe area. I used to hear decent reviews of the Lord Jim and the Exhibition Court Hotel.

St Christopher's Shepherd's Bush is a pretty good one. There is a bar at the ground floor which doubles up as the reception area, and a "chill-out room" at the basement with a large LCD TV and a ping-pong table. There's no kitchen for guests to use though, but you can buy food from nearby take-away shops or from the bar itself and eat in the chill-out room. Most of the time, over half of the guests and staff are Australians, so you'll feel right at home. About lockers, somehow only the 6 and 8 bed dorm have two metal cage (bring your own padlock) under each double-deck beds for you to store valuable stuff. You could leave your valuables with the office (at basement) if you want to. Shepherd's Bush is an area where many Australians and Kiwis stay or flock to, and there's a Walkabout 5 minutes walk away from the hostel.

I stayed there for a few months earlier this year. There were some Australian working holidaymakers who had stayed there even longer than me and were still there when I left a couple of months ago! :)

Have a friend who really recommends Palmer's Lodge (and she's a huge germaphobe), but can't say anything about it personally. Cheers!

I heard good things about Palmers Lodge, too. I almost stayed there last December but had to cancel my booking because I got free accommodation.

Palmers Lodge does look good. It rates third for hostels in London by popularity and the rating is based on over 2500 reviews, made by travellers who are guaranteed to have stayed at the place. There are two rated higher though, but only just :)

If you're willing to consider something other than hostels, there's a few guesthouses and hotels that rate slightly higher (just choose the 'All London Budget Accommodation' link on above page).

if you want a quiet area, Paddington's Wake Up! London hostel is pretty good
i stayed there for a couple of weeks when i first moved to London - it was nothing special, but not many hostels are!!!

If you look on the hostelworld.com website, there are tons of hostels - and i have used them to book hostels all over europe

Good luck!

you can try couch surfing... some ppl will gladly take you for a week or something, and that doesnt cost much, it also means that they can maybe hook you up with a job if they have some connections, and you might make a couple of new friends for your time there!

I thought Wake Up were setting up in London, but didn't hear anything more about it. Interestingly enough, they aren't included on the hw system (psst, don't use their site anymore, we have exactly the same properties at exactly the same price over here) :)

ooh I hate London Hostels

but this is so on point:

Yes I stay at teh Lord Jim alot, its reasonable priced if your are two or more people.
Earls court is a nice area and theres a hostel there as well (hard to find when i was there in 2003) - come out of the station, cross the street and its on ur left a block or two/three up, before the pub (the pub is adjacent to the street Lord Jim is on)
