This mabey a silly question but its something i wouldn;t mind cleared up. Im taking my laptop with me to Oz and i did some looking into a new lead or mabey a travel plug. From what i saw Oz and NZ use either a 2 or 3 pin system like the US, but not 100% the same, the 3rd pin being an earthing pin. I can only find a 3 uk pin to 2 Oz pin converter but my laptop has a 3rd UK pin for earthing.
Does this matter at all ?
Thanks in advance
If you're unable to find a converter with 3-pins, they can easily be bought in Australia from Dick Smith (equivalent of Dixons in the UK).
I moved over here for a while last year from the UK, and had to get a few from Dick Smith for a couple of computers!
It doesn't matter I think. We use the UK plug here in Singapore too and I've never had problems using my appliances whenever I'm in Australia. The difference between the two 2-pin plugs are that for the US one both pins are parallel to each other while for the Aust one they're angled to form a slight V shape. Plus there're also voltage differences.
I have a multiple adaptor (brand: SPORTZTREK) that enables you to connect almost anything to anything. It cost about AU$25. I packs down to a 5x6x4cm cube and works beautifully. The only countries it will not handle are South Africa and Sri Lanka. BUT be aware of voltage differences! Most newer appliances are dual voltage, either auto or switchable, but check yours to be sure. Your 110v machines will melt if you connect to our 240v.
If it comes down to it, you'll be able to buy your adaptors in the airport when you arrive, then you can be sure you have the right one for the country
Thanks for all the replies. I think the laptop power supple can change to 110v but Oz is 240v @ 50hz while the uk is 230v @ 50hz. So i dont think i'll melt anything. I was just supprised that you couldn't buy the 3 pin oz plug.
I'll have a look while over in australia. I also found a good website to see what each country's plugs are. But it is a shop as well. So some admin let me know if i can post it please !
