Hi people

Does anybody know of a company that offer cheap travel/medical insurance. I'm off to Oz for a year, leaving Jan 05.

I know that the UK has a reciprocal agreement with Australia but as far as I'm aware you still need medical insurance.

Any advice on this would be helpful

If you're just interested in the medical aspect of the insurance then most insurance policies require you to register for Medicare in any case, which sort of negates the need for getting medical insurance in Oz.

Personally I wouldn't bother with medical insurance for countries that have a reciprocal agreement with the UK, provided the standard of medical care in that country is decent, which it is in Australia.

Thanks for the info. I'll check out Medicare.

oz/nz travel insurance from travellers contact point looks good and there are different policies for different requirments, but u can be insured for all the usual plus working and hazourdous activities, its worth looking at, and u get a discount if u have a vip, YHA or nomads card.

hope this helps

from what i understand here, its better to get insurance in oz and not back home? is that even possible?
here in israel u pay about 1.89 US dollars a day for medical, luggage and search and rescue.
how much will all this cost if i did it in oz?
for someone who plans on being in oz and NZ for a year it turns out a lot of money!

If you have any major credit card ( MBNA, VISA or from an international bank) have a look at their terms and conditions and generally speaking if you purchase your ticket/package and pay for it wholly on your card, really good travel & medical insurance is thrown in as a bonus by the credit card company!
I only found this out AFTER I went and bought my ticket and got separate insurance, but it's well worth looking into,
Have a great trip!

Thanks jessianne

The card I used to purchase my ticket did include insurance but I purchased a one way ticket so I'm not sure how long I'd be covered for.

I'll check out the terms and conditions anyway.

Thanks again
