Can anyone help regarding taking a uk mobile phone to oz and nz.
I believe I can buy a sim card when I arrive?

Any ideas how much with vodaphone?

Also Ive been told that I have to get my phone unlocked?

Can I just buy top up cards like in the uk for a phone credit?

Many thanks

Hi Nykky,

Yep, you should be able to buy a sim card for around 30-50 australian dollars on arrival. This will also contain credit for calls so it's pretty cheap.

If your phone has a sim lock on it, then you will have to get it unlocked before leaving. Your operator in the uk should be able to help you out with that one. If that costs a ton of money (I am not sure if this is free but believe it is), you might be better off buying a cheap handset with sim card down in Australia as a package. Last time I was there you could pick up a phone with sim card for about 130 australian dollars.

They sell top cards everywhere....

Like sam said... you can get a sim card for around 30 dollars. There are four main networks - Optus, Telstra, Vodafone and Virgin Mobile (which is run on the optus network).

Don't know what the calling rates are like... If you want to buy a sim card before you leave (e.g. so you can give your number to family and friends) have a look @

Hi Nicnac,

Prepaid mobile SIM cards are everywhere. I recommend the Vodafone "no plans." Priced at about $30.00. This includes $30.00 worth of call credits and up to 60 free text messages. Calls cost around 60 cents per-minute. Text messages about .25 cents to anywhere in the world. I do recommend making sure that your phone isn't SIM locked as if it is you won't be able to use it.

Recharge cards are sold everywhere from gas stations to corner stores and you can even top-up with your CC over the phone.

Happy travels

Both NZ and AUST Vodafone Prepaids can now roam in opossite
