I am about to go on my RTW travels soon and am wanting to get another tattoo done before I leave. As part of my travels I will be visiting the West Coast of the US (within the first month) and quite like the idea of getting it done in San Fran or LA.
I have several other tattoos so have a good idea of the ‘healing time’ and the procedures needed to keep it clean etc, but just wanted to know if anyone else has done it whilst travelling and if you know of the prices I can expect to pay? (The size of the tattoo will be approx 2 inches). Can you also recommend any decent places?
Im not an expert on tattoos but your choice of the US western coast sounds good enough. Cable TV in my country has been running 'LA Ink' and 'Miami Ink' non-stop for the past few months on Discovery Travel & Living. These two programmes are about entrepreneurial tattoo artists setting up shops in Los Angeles and Miami. It seems there's a vibrant culture there.
However, the frequency of these programmes is driving me crazy. They come on at 11pm every night without fail. I'd prefer to watch travel shows!
Don't know about places in the U.S., but I did get my tattoo whilst travelling on my working holiday in New Zealand. I wanted something unique so I got my best friend to design something for me and closer to the end of our trip she came up with a few ideas. I took the scribbles to a tattoo parlour in Auckland, that had been recommended by a friend and right from when I entered I felt comfortable in the shop and with the staff, so I decided to have it done then and there. And I've never regretted the decision! Not only the tattoo is still of great quality (5 years later) but I also have a beautiful (permanent) memory of our travels to N.Z. !
All in all, I'd recommend to you to check out a few tattoo places first until you feel comfortable and then I'd say you should be fine!
If you speak the language like a native of the country that you want to get your tattoo done in then it will be fine. If not, then don't do it. You will more than likely be ripped off.
I recommend, upon getting to San Francisco or Los Angeles (whichever is first), check out the tattoos you see while walking around. Be bold and ask where they had their art done and if they recommend the parlor. Also ask about price. If you aren't happy with the answers at your first destination, wait and do the same at the second. SF and LA are big so lots of parlors from which to choose.
