I think Bencoolen Street is where you find lots of hostels. I could be wrong, though.

Stayed in Bugis Backpackers about a year ago. It was decent and clean, and with air-conditioning too. Location is good, shops and restaurants around, and the MRT station (Bugis) is just across the road. One of Singapore's bus terminals is just 5 minutes walk away if you want to travel to Malaysia. Check out the Singapore budget accommodation section for a list of hostels with ratings and reviews.

I stayed at the Inn Crowd which is also mentioned in the Singapore Wiki guide i think. it's a great little backpackers - friendly, clean and social and in a good location. I think Bugis station is nearest to it.
