Hi there,

My partner and i are hoping to travel on our RTW ticket for 12 months (providing we have the money), we are going to fly to singapore then over land through malaysia, thailand, vietnam & china. We then fly out of Hong Kong to Melbourne, overland up east coast & back, fly melbourne to christchuch, Auckland to Santiago/buenos aires & home from Rio. We plan to spend the majority of our time in Asia and only maybe 6 wks in Oz.

Does anyone have any vague idea of how much money would be needed to see us through the year?
How much did you spend whilst travelling?
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hey Jordy,

I haven't done the whole year off, but I did do 3 months in South America. I was spending around $40 a day for food / lodging / incidentals (laundry, museum entry, etc.) and most land transportation. Flights and special tours were extra.

I was spending more than I "needed" to because I wanted private rooms with baths and no chicken buses. You could get away with much less.

Probably a better way to approach putting together your budget is figuring out how much money you have, and then determining what your top destinations are. Then figure out how much those destinations would cost and figure out how much you could do.

i went to malaysia and thailand for a month in july. i reckon i spent around 600 USD inclusive accomodation, air fares, food and evrything u can think to be. i flew five times on my trip cause there are plaes where u cannot go by land. i would give u an example that if u weant to go from peninsular malaysia to the boeneo part of malaysia then u have to fly. amd by the way i travelled both the countries as in it involved lots of travel so i reckon you shud be spending less around 400 usd per person that is around 10 usd per day if u r living on a backpackers budget. and i beleive u wont be doing lots of travellin in a short time like i had to see the countries in a month and u wud probably have more than that i believe. anyhow if u want any info regardin malaysia or thailand then if i can help u feel free to mail me

hey jordy
i didnt travel by trains outside cities as they r slow and not upto mark with regard to cleanliness. besides buses can get u there much quicker and r better suitred for the budget traveller as lets say u can get off the bus and meet people as u go along coz u only buy ticket for a single leg quite unlike train travel which wouldnt allow u to buy a flexible ticket. although i ould ecommend u that there r some places woth visiting onlky by train like the taman negara wildlife park. the best wasy to view the surroundings is to take the jungle railway. besides i think air travel is really cheap with airasia and other low cost budget airlines but i would recommend u to alteast buy the ticket 2 months prior to ur journey as u would save quite a lot of money
so pls tell me b8 urself where have u travellled so far
