I have an opportunity to travel with friends in September 2008 to Ireland (Dubline area) and stay with ones family. I can also stay with another friend in Germany (Heidelberg). I would like to squeeze in a visit to both places. Does anyone know what is the least expensive approach? I live in San Diego, and may have enough frequent flyer miles for a free ticket to JFK and fly out of NY. From there, the question is whether to fly from the US to Ireland or Germany as a base, and then take Ryan Air (?) to the country I want to visit. Any thoughts? Thank you!
Easy solution for this one. Fly to whichever country is the cheapest and take Ryan Air. Of course always check with your travel agent to see if there are any freakish routings that would give you a cheap flight stopping in both cities, but that's unlikely. But I just did a 20 second search with Ryan Air for random dates in Sept, and a return flights between Dublin and Frankfurt are 20 Euros, or $31. You spend more than that getting to the airport.
just remember the hidden taxes with ryanair.... €15 just to check ur bag.................
It doesn't matter whether you fly from NY to Dublin or to Frankfurt. Cost of the flight ticket should be almost the same. Maybe it is a bit cheaper to Dublin.
And yes, for a visit to Heidelberg you are pretty much limited to Ryanair for budget flights. Note though that budget is not always the least expensive, it can work out cheaper to book the ticket with Lufthansa if it means you get to fly from FRA with a baggage allowance of 20 kgs.
