I'm going to Canada in March 05 for a 1 year working holiday. I'm a great music lover and a bit of a hippy. Does anyone know of any music festivals or altenative living festivals in Canada? I want to work and travel all over Canada but I will be starting in BC - most probably Vancouver. There's a few alternative festivals in Oz which I love to go to and would like to experience the Canadian versions....
The North by Northeast music festival has a lot of music of all sorts: http://www.nxne.com/
CFNY "The Edge (102.1)," one of the radio stations in Toronto puts on a yearly festival called Edgefest. Depending on what you call alternative, it may be a little "pop Alternative" for your tastes, but they do have smaller stages to catch some up and coming bands. Details can be found (once announced) at www.edge.ca
Wakestock is a wake boarding competition that takes place north of Toronto. They usually have music that wake boarders like going on. This year featured "Stand-out live shows by Moneen, AlexisOnFire, The Ataris and Andrew WK" (according to the web-site). Check out http://www.wakestock.com/.
Also, check out listings for music in the Eye magazine. Available free on the street in Toronto, or online at www.eye.net.
Montreal has a great Jazz Fest at the end of every June:
Plus there's an international film fest, Just for Laughs (comedy fest), a beer fest, a food fest, Afican fest, Caribbean fest - you name it.

Hope that helps...
