Travel Forums Australia / New Zealand & The Pacific Old guy down under

nvbirdman has indicated that this thread is about Australia

I'm thinking about a trip to OZ in about two years, but at sixty two years old, I'm too old for backpacking/hostels. On a somewhat tight buget, where should I go? Where can I stay?
Alice Springs and NZ would be at the top of my list.
I am a down to earth kind of guy and something like the Sidney Opera House would probably be next to last on my list. (It would be one small step above watching dingos mate.)

Hi Nvbirdman,

Why should you be too old for hostels? You can stay at them at any age, there are no age limits any more. I've stayed at many YHAs in Australia and NZ and there have even been retired people, and not few of them. Plus, you do not really need to backpack... more and more people are taking a suitcase on wheels with them, even at hostels!

I agree with Ladyice. Hostels are easy-going friendly places. They have private rooms from about $60.00 per-night, to 4-bed dorms from $25.00 per-night. YHA might suit you best as their members are all ages because they have been around for so long. You will find that once you stay in one and get use to the way they work you will soon realise that your age doesn't matter.

If you are on a budget and you want to meet other budget travellers then you have few other alternatives except maybe for a few pubs that have private rooms. Watch these places though as they are often noisy and not so flash.

Happy travels
