Travel Forums Europe Ireland visa extension?

Hello everyone!

I am a US citizen and have an opportunity to stay with a friend in Ireland starting in August. I'd like to be in Europe for 4.5 months, Ireland as my home base. My very rough plan is as follows:

August - Ireland 2 weeks, England 2 weeks
September - Ireland 2 weeks, Belgium 2 weeks
October - France 2 weeks, Italy 2 weeks
November - Italy 1 week, Switzerland 1 week?, Ireland 2 weeks
December - Ireland 2 weeks

I have a one-ticket from Boston to Dublin for August 4th. I know I need to get a return ticket back to the states but it won't be until mid-December (more than 90 days after I arrive). Should I also get my tickets to the other countries I plan on visiting ahead of time so I can prove I won't be in Ireland the entire 4.5 months upon arrival? Will I be denied entry back into Ireland after 90 days? Am I supposed to register with the Garda Immigration Bureau and get an extension for 3 more months (I can prove I can financially support myself)?

Thanks for your help!!

I don't know the actual answer, but what I can tell you is that Ireland is really tightening down these days, so be wary. Also everything is very case by case, so just because it could possibly work doesn't mean that it will. At the very least I'm going to say that unless you can tell them your valid reason for staying "in "longer than than three months, then you will need a return ticket in that time. I don't know what their rules are about in and out, and how long you have to be gone for it to be "gone" but this might be your best option for working it all out. Also, check this out:

Thanks for your reply! I am still a bit confused, however. Is it 90 consecutive days after I arrive that I'm allowed to be in Ireland or 90 total days? Would I need a re-entry visa?
