This July I am going to go for a week to the Greek Island of Samos for the first time and because I've never ben there before, I was wondering if anyone else has been there and whether there's any good advice for me such as good places to go, whether the market shopping is good, any food I should really try or restaurants and if there's anything I should watch out for or be careful of such as perhaps there may be pick pockets in the area?
Even if you've never been to Samos in particular and you've just been to Greece generally is there anything to know. Thank you!

Samos is a great island to visit. Few places to include in your itinerary -

  • Theatre of Pythagorio
  • Archaeological Museum
  • Eupalinian Aqueduct
  • Monastery of Panagia Vrontiani
  • Temple of Hera

There are a few taxis that will take you from the airport to your town of choice. At times, the taxis will take several passengers and drop them along the route.

I stayed a Kokkari, a fishing harbor and soon turning in to a major tourist center, for better or worse. Two sandy beaches are Lemonakia beach and Tsamadou Bay. Potami [in Karlovassi, a neighboring town] has a great beach. You can rent scooters/motorcycles in town or else you will have to wait for taxis for your commutes. Then there is Pythagorion, another tourist spot, and I would recommend the museum.

Have a wonderful trip!

Lot of fresh salad with feta, a variety of olives, tomatoes, cucumber, lettuce, onions, and fresh herbs. I liked an eggplant and garlic dish [forgot the name]. If you like seafood, several restaurants have a 'catch of the day'.

With regard to shopping, I picked up a few pottery items. Of course, difficult to carry along but worth it. The Pythagorean cup can be an interesting buy with Greek motif on the outside.

And then there is Ouzo [if you like anise-flavored liqueur]. When in Greece... (-:

I'm sorry that I don't know much about being out in the catamarans. )-:

One quick note... you can take the ferry from Samos to Kusadasi, Turkey. Worth it.
