Sam I Am and I have been exchanging stuff on the 'how many countries thread', but we also seem to both have had strange overnight experiences in Holland.
But I reckoned it might make a good thread - well at least good for a laugh or a bit of embarassment .
So... what's the strangest overnight experience you've had while travelling?
Looking forward to seeing all these travelers tales (who knows some might even be true )
[ Edit: Sorry, no websites please ]
When I was traveling in Italy I got lodging in the wing of a convent that had been converted into a hotel.
To start with when checking in, they wouldn't let my friend (a girl) and myself (a boy) share the same room, but the place was dirt cheap, so we went for it.
This was back in 1990 when Italy won the world cup? not sure exactly but there was a big party in the streets. Not knowing any better my friend and I walked out to enjoy everyone's levity over their team's victory... what a wild party that was!!!.
My story get's interesting when we returned to the "nun hotel" to find ourselves locked out, and a note taped to the door saying.
If you find your self locked out, please note that it is after curfew.
Please return in the morning after 8a.m.
Fortunately for us we were able to get through the night on the streets of Florence, but I have to say to this day that is my wierdest hotel story.
I don't really have any good stories but imonaghan's was so funny I wanted to restart this thread because I bet other people have great stories...
Really my only story is staying overnight in London Heathrow airport. My sister and I were flying from Zambia to the states. We were at the airport for 16 hours and have about a 15 min. home video of us in the airport. It's a fairly amusing video because we got pretty bored and tired but were too cold to sleep.
We did meet a 22 year old Zambian guy from the states. We played a lot of card games together and gave him some pointers on living in the states as he had never been there before. We also got really scared by some crazy janitor guy that was looking at us real funny and we had real raunchy coffee at about 4 a.m. We played video games for a while...
So if anyone has any good stories please share...
This is just one embarrising travel moment of mine and not the worst by a long shot!
In the summer of 2001 I set of to interail around Europe on my own for a month, two weeks into the trip and I found myself camping just outside of Venice. The campsite was near the airport and had a few 'permanent' residents in the shape of engineers working their from England. I spent one day drinking with these blokes and ended up totally monged, I was in such a state that I couldnt manage to get into my tent, I leant forward to open the zipper and collapsed in a heap. I awoke the next morning lying on my back and for a second I wondered where I was, I looked to my right and the French family that were camping next to me all stood together looking at me in a strange manner, I smiled and began to sit up, to my horror I looked down and saw that I was completely naked!! In my drunken condition I had managed to undress myself during the night.
I consider myself to be an absolute disgrace.
Wow, you know youv'e had a good night when it ends in public nudity right
Mine isn't as funny but was strange.
I was staying in a hostel in Pondicherry (South India) and I had just taken one of my malaria tablets (sure you've heard of LARIUM) well, lets just say I didn't take too well to them.
I was up all night hallucinating.
First it was the tap, dripping but everytime I went to check it it was completely off and the sound would stop. Then I had people wandering through the door at the head of my bed (there was no door) past my bed occasionally stopping to stare at me or tell me something.
Then there was the guy trying to get in at the window, funnily enough in the morning I checked and the window was on a 30 ft sheer dropping
wall, no access posible.
Damn that was a good night,
I telephoned my boyfriend(ex) in the middle of it all and he was with his friends, they found it hilarious and insisted I brought some of the tablets back for their enjoyment! (obviously I was, at the time, not amused.)
great thread though!
Mim – very impressive for managing to get people to take malaria tablets just for the fun of it!!
I’ve not had a particularly bizarre night or one that’s ended with public nudity (that I am aware of anyway) although I have slept/spent the night in places where most people think I’m crazy, but I class as resourceful! Partly it’s because i’ve had insomnia several times and didn’t see the point in getting a room/hostel bed, and partly it’s just circumstance / shit happens.
Amongst others, I’ve slept on numerous railway stations (in, I think, 13 countries), some bus stations, a car park, a shopping trolley, park benches and hedges, under a parked car, in the remains of a burnt out car (not the same car), in a mailsack, in a bus in the depot, a cardboard box, caves, a wheelie bin (was awoke the next morning by the binman attaching the bin onto the back of the truck in order to empty it…), a motorway service station, in hospitals, fields (including one with a very angry bull in it), airports (despite me not flying), on roofs, ferry terminals, the Helsingor – Helsingborg ferry (missed last train/bus so spent night going back and fore on the ferry!), in a public toilet (not literally in), on beaches/sand dunes and up a tree – big hint – after a few drinks, don’t ever follow an instinct which says it’s a good idea to sleep up a tree.
In addition, a friend of mine went to see his sister off at the airport in Geneva one evening a few years ago, fell asleep on the train home and woke up the next morning in Zagreb…
Wow thats bloody impressive!
I think the weirdest place I've slept is...the bath tub(empty)(happened quite a few times actually I think it's turning into a bit of a bad habit
also slept on top of my shed (plenty a bugs) and umm yeah I could actually say yes me too to quite a few of those like park benches, stations, up trees etc, I have odd sleeping patterns, I'm a bit of a vampire and tend to sleep during the day, my friends went through a period of calling me 'Cousin IT' because I used to fall asleep on tables with my long blond hair all over the place!
I think it definately makes for better story telling when you had the occasional unusual bed right?
