Hello,

We're planning on visiting Fraser Island but travelling by foot. As a result we want to catch the ferry to Wanggoolba Creek, the closest port to which we can walk to Central Station. The ferries leave from River Heads rather than Hervey Bay. Has anybody visited Fraser Island by foot rather than 4x4 and if so do you have any tips? Also, does anybody know if there are any transport links between Hervey Bay and River Heads?

Thanks

Hi, i've recently done fraser island. i wouldn't advise doing it by foot. the island is pretty big and walking from indian head to camp will take over an hour. lake mckenzie is approx a 1 hr drive so a very long walk. why dont you want to do the 4x4, so far its one of the highlights of my stay in oz.

Hi, Fraser Island is a great place to go trekking but it's a big place. If you're not worried about how big it is and have heaps of time to explore, and the great walk is awesome! Grab a map from the QLD national parks site and check out the scale to get an idea of how big it is and see if it's something you want to do.

When I was there I drove over and then did sections of the great walk, but would have loved to do the whole thing! If you did the whole walk, you'd need to be totally self sufficient.
