Have you checked out this page? It's our new beta system and also allows you to let other travellers know that you will be staying there. Great way to meet people before heading off!! There's some more explaining this concept of 'Social Bookings' in this forum thread.

I don't always agree with Lonely planet recommendations but in San José I had a wonderful time staying at Costa Rica Backpackers. Awesome place, close to the city centre with clean rooms, friendly staff and even a swimming pool!!
I spend three nights there a few years back and met heaps of friendly and relaxed other backpackers there.
If I'd ever return, I'd definitely stay again.

You should rate it Steff :) Your post did remind me of the place and sure enough, I stayed there in 2002/2003! So my rating is already added. Something is way wrong with the map on that page though as it's putting the hostel in Spain. Ah, that's why it's beta still. Better go get that fixed!!

It's very new and technically still in beta, but works just fine :)

A hostel with many people, but not too noisy...

The easiest is to go to one of the big hostels in San Jose: Tranquilos, Pangea or Costa Rica Backpackers.

There are many small hostels in San Jose, here is a list: http://www.backpacker-costarica.com/directory/
