Please help. Are Cuzco and Cusco different cities in Peru? I have looked up different sites and both spellings are used for the city near machu pichu. They are listed as different cities in the accommodation section of this site but the spelling cuzco doesn't have any available places. Any help in clearing this issue would be greatly appreciated.

They are one and the same. Spelling should be Cuzco. Wonderful place. Enjoy your trip.

Hi, yes they are the same but I am sorry to say that Eve is wrong. The right way to spell it will be Cusco.

Here is why:

- Cusco comes from Quechua (The Incas tongue)
- Quechua didnt have writing (Or so it is believe at the moement but recent studies of the "Quipus" are showing that maybe they where not only a counting system but also a writing one) so Cusco was never written by the Incas, so we can say there is no exact way to write it.
- The problem with Cuzco is that, when written with a Z it will mean (With the today acepted way of writing quechua) Dog and the people from Cusco refuses to be confused with dogs.. That is why the Oficial (By government) way of writing Cusco is with an S: CUSCO

A bit of info to make things clearer.

Cya.

Thankyou both. That is really a relief. My plane ticket says cusco and I was stressing that I may end up in the wrong spot.
