I like Bondi, it's on the beach and has a lovely cafe culture, but it's also only about 10 minutes from the city. Make sure you live on the beach and not in the junction.

Depends on what you're interested in really. Never had to stay in hotels/hostels/etc but personally I loved living in the inner city - and from memory there used to be a pretty lively hostel near where we used to live in Darlinghurst.

Kings Cross is packed full of cheap accommodation & sure it is kinda sleazy but not as bad as everyone makes out, provided you've got some modicum of common sense (drugs are bad kids) it's actually a rather friendly, eccentric place to live. Circular Quay, the Opera House & the bridge are literally blocks away, it's a 5 minute cab ride to Oxford Street - basically it only takes 15/20 minutes to get pretty much anywhere if you stick to staying the city.

Be careful around the train stations late at night though - Once the crowds thin out they aren't the greatest places to be

I loved staying in the city centre too - i stayed in base backpackers on Kent street. This probably isn't the cheapest place to stay but there are plenty of other options. Glebe is a nice area Glebe YHA there is supposed to be nice.
