Guide books, keep em or dump them?

Travel Forums General Talk Guide books, keep em or dump them?

Hello folks,

Here I am updating my blog with a whole pile of guidebooks I have used for a trip involving 19+/- countries. I posted nearly all of them to an address ahead for two reasons:

1- to have research material to use in a blog/book one day.

2- sentimental value.

I just wonder what other people do with their guide books? (once you don't need them anymore)

This question is probably better suited to long term travelers over several countries.

Since I am now looking at my stack of books, and thinking how much it cost me to buy them and then post them I do not think I will do it again. Research and material can be found easily on the web now, and with a small journal of specific places it seems fine to not post them.

I also found it not so easy to sell or swap them, maybe it was the places I was in. But I would prefer to give away my guide book to a stranger than to sell it at a book store for 50cents!!

Strangely enough the one with the most sentimental value is the LP to Middle east I bought new in Turkey, remove the Iran section and sold the rest to an Oz couple heading to Syria. I got lots of strange looks from people as I took out this torn and tattered bunch of paper!

Anyway just some idle thoughts

I always keep my travel books, I love looking at them every now and then. It's kind of a reminder.

I'm worse--I always buy the Eyewitness travel guide to wherever I'm going so I can add to the collection on the bookshelf. They're handy, interesting, practical--and pretty!

Yeah, I keep my travel books too. It's nice to see a row of them listing the places I've been to.

I keep them and once in a while I'll open them and read through what had i wrote or drew in that book while travelling:)

I always keep them like most people here, it looks so great on the book shelf to have a bunch of LP or other guides and well, I paid for them

It depends - I like to keep them if I can, but have had to dump them before to save me carrying them around after I have finished with them or to stop my baggage being overweight. It's definitely nice to keep them for sentimental value though.
