Travel Forums Central/South America & The Caribbean girl traveling alone south america

I've gotten myself into the very lucky predicament of having a year, plenty of money and the freedom to go anywhere i choose in the world. I've decided that I want to explore south America starting in the north somewhere ( i was thinking Venezuela?) stay there for 3 months to get improve my Spanish and then hoping a plane to Ecuador and from there spend the next 9 months exploring South America.

I'll be going alone and i'm a 19 year old American girl. Is this ridiculous? I'm prepared to be robbed here and there but other than that is this too dangerous for me to do? I can't imagine anything I want to do more than this.

where do you think would be a good place to start the year?

I would caution you on this part of the world. There have been problems especially in Columbia and Brazil and several Caribbean islands too. I do believe SE Asia to be a much safer destination. If this is your very first trip abroad, I'd say try Mexico first and then decide on SA.

What exactly have you personally done in these countries?!!? What dangerous experiences have you had? OR are you just stating the generic danger stament?!

if you go to SE Asia watch out for earth quakes, sunami's, desease, and general hatred toward americans!

ice,

If you really are keen on doing this trip in South America, from a safety standpoint, I think you will be just fine in Chile, Uruguay, and Argentina. I just returned from Argentina/Uruguay a month ago and I didn't encounter any issues relating to safety. I also met a LOT of female indepent travelers in both countries so it's not really an issue at all. Clearly, some hostels facilitate meeting other travelers better. If you do decide to go to Argentina, and need hostel recommendations, feel free to send me a personal message and I'd be more than glad to help.

Ecuador,Peru,Chile,Argentina,Uruguay no problem,
Bolivia I dont know, have not traveled there but since there are many backpackers around you could find other solo travellers.
would not recommend Venezuela alone.

Of all the countries mentioned only Chile is safer than Colombia-which is a fabulous destination.

poorbuthappy.com has all kinds of Colombia info for the curious.
