This thread is marked as being about Sri Lanka

Is it worthwhile picking up a cheap simple cell phone on prepay while holidaying in SL.
The main purpose would be to use occasionally locally, and to txt home internationally.
Has anyone done it, and did it work well ??

Buying a pre-paid sim card is very cheap in Sri Lanka and ideal for travellers.

A dialog gsm "kit" sim card would cost you around USD 20 and can be purchased at the airport, any Dialog outlets in the country or any supermarkets, grocery stores that has a dialog sticker on the door or counter. Then, you just need to refill with prepaid cards, as and when you did. These cards are available in LKR 50 (USD 0.5) to LKR 1000 (USD 10) denominations.

There are other mobile pre-paid phone packages, such as Mobitel, Celltel, Tigo etc. but Dialog has better coverage around the island.

If you require a mobile phone, there are cheap phones that come up with a package (pre-paid or monthly post-paid) available at various places: Softlogic, CBA in central Colombo are ones that come to my mind immediately. Phone prices can start from LKR 10,000 (~USD 100).

Wow, quick answer :)

I’ll bring an old gsm phone with me from NZ, as I only want to use it for a couple of months, and then I’ll just give it away to someone before I leave the country.

Good advice Ahila, thank you.
