In july/August my family will be travelling around east aust. we would like to take each day at a time, but unsure about how easy it will be to pick up accommodation at short notice. Any one know?
Also, I'd appreciate it if anyone can recommend places for my 9 year old daughter see/do. ta
Depends which places on the East Coast and on what dates. If you plan on being in Sydney in early-mid July, then you are about 8 months too late to get anything at a reasonable price. Places were booking out in September last year for the dates when the Hillsong Conference, World Youth Day and the Pope visit are on. Can't tell you those exact dates but I am sure if you did a Google search they would appear. You may still find a couple of places around Kings Cross region in about the 3 star range with a little bit of availability but that is a region not very children friendly especially after dark when all the prostitutes and druggies come out in larger volumes. Most other places and on other dates in Sydney you shouldn't have many problems but that's not to say that if you attempted to stay in a small place somewhere along the way with only one or two places to choose from that you might not come across little to no availability if you arrive late in the afternoon/early evening.
School holidays in Australia are approx 5-20 July so after this time you should not have too much trouble with accommodation. In Sydney you can stay out in the suburbs and it is only a short trip into the city by bus, train or ferry.
In Sydney Taronga Zoo is wonderful and if you are heading up to Queensland on the Gold Coast there are some terrific fun parks, Seaworld, Movieworld etc, great beaches as well as the Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary a little further north on the Sunshine Coast you will find Australia Zoo. There are many interesting places right along the east coast.
