Mexico City 24 hour stop over

Travel Forums North America Mexico City 24 hour stop over

I fly into Mexico City in three weeks time (after a long flight from Sydney with two other shother stopovers) at 8am in the morning, and have a flight to Cancun 8am the next morning.

What can be done in such a short time? Should I book a hostel? I'm open for any suggestions of what to do.

This is the first time I have travelled solo.

Mexico City is way far more interesting than Cancun!!! Change your itinerary immediately (and do not pass go). Cancun is more American than Mexican anyway.

I reallyreally wish I could.

I start a tour departing from Cancun the day after I leave Mexico City that was bought as an 'early birthday present' from my mum when she found out I was going to travel over there. I can't leave Australia any earlier due to Uni exams.

I'm caught between a rock and a hard place. Even if I go to Mexico City afterwards when I start my 'truly solo travel', I'm still stuck with spending a mere 24 hours there pre-Cancun

Here are a few things to do -

- Museo del Tempo Mayor [in the heart of the city and the area around is a good place to spend the day]
- Museo Nacional de Antropología [might take half a day to really appreciate the museum]
- Museo Frida Kahlo [if you like art]
- Xochimilco [depending on the day of the week, it is a nice spot to visit]

Or, you can spend your day at the Zona Rosa.

Take your yellow taxi (about 15USD to Downtown Mexico City), be careful there are two yellow companies, take the cheaper one...

Try the hostel just behind the cathedral, you will be steps from the Templo Mayor, The Spanish Cultural Centre, The Cathedral, The National Palace, Zocalo, the Historic Centre, and all where the most touristic well guarded areas are. Take the turibus (Tour bus) that is like 10USD, for the whole day and you can just get on and off at any corner you may want to stop and take a quick look, it goes all around the most important sightseening spots in the whole touristic area, right from the Zocalo, which will be just 1 block from where you may be staying, and it takes u up to Chapultepec, all that strip can be done by walking but since you are short in time, the best thing to do is taking that bus.

Or... you can try the southern part of the City, and try the other touriroute, (another circuit) and try Coyoacan, The Frida Khalo Museum, San Angel, etc.,

It would be good you first decided what you want to do, but definitely there is plenty of more action in the Historic Centre.

Good luck!!

Hope you enjoy Mexico City!
Enjoy Cancun too!!
