I plan on travelling from Mexico City to Cancun and have about two weeks to do so. I was wondering if anyone knew of any good sites or towns in between and if the bus is the best option. Thanks in advance!

There is plenty to see, you can start with Puebla, then Veracruz, then Tabasco, then either Campeche or Chiapas and then all the way to Merida and then the little stops in between checking the lovely Maya towns, until you reach Cancun, but if you like comfort take the plane (only 1,500pesos (about 150USD) and fly to Cancun.

It's worth spending some time in Puebla, one of the most beautiful cities anywhere! Cancun is a dive unless you like hanging out with slob-gringos.

If you're travelling by car, get a spare supply of gas. Some federal roads in the peninsule don't have gas stations in large areas.

You have to go to Xalapa after stopping in Puebla (a little off the main way, but worth it). There is a great archeological museum, you can do rafting, buy coffee and enjoy the cultural life. From there, you can go to Veracruz and take the highway up to Villahermosa (lovely town but obscenly hot). Now, if you are planning on a 2 week basis, you can go down to Chiapas, which is a whole travel by itself, but if not, you can just make a stop in Palenque and then go up to Campeche.

From Villahermosa, there are 2 ways of getting to Cancun,

1 - Go north to Campeche, then Merida, then Cancun (lots of ruins to stop by, including Chichen Itza and Uxmal)
2 - Go east to Chetumal and take the coast road (not in very good conditions, but the south of the peninsule has the most amazing reservoir and ruins, and then the mayan riviera is a paradise)
