Hostels during the day

Travel Forums Europe Hostels during the day

I will be staying in hostels during my trip to Italy and Greece. If they provide lockers, I will put my backpack in one during the day but what about my bed stuff (Pajamas, sleep sack)? Do people usually pack up everything each day as if they are leaving and then take any bed that's available when they come back for the night or do you claim a bed for the full 3-4 days you are there and keep some stuff on the bed to mark it?

Mark your territory for the time you're there!

you generally take the same bed for the whole time you are there, so it's fine to leave your stuff on your bed during the day.

Just leave all of your stuff on or near your bed. At least make it appear as if it's occupied. Just know that most lockers will only be large enough for a few items, perhaps a small travel pack if you're lucky. I'd like to assume that all travelers put their valuables in any provided lockers but was proved wrong recently when a girl I was staying with had her camera taken from her pack which was laying near her bed. It was wide open, I saw it and even told her that she should put it away. Obviously she didn't listen. Never get too comfortable with what you leave is what I'm trying to get at lol.

I appreciate when people pack up their stuff even if they are staying in the room for multiple nights. It just looks better when things are organized instead of having crap all over the place.

I agree mostly with what NantesFC said about packing. I think you don't have to go to quite as much trouble as if you were leaving, but mostly packing up/putting away so that other's have room as well is always nice and much more inviting for the new folks coming in. I tend to leave brochures and such from the day before on my bed. Won't miss them if they are gone, but so far it's always done the trick. Also, some places will assign beds, so in that case find the one you're assigned to, though even in that case there could be someone it in:) Overall, as far as theft goes, people generally don't have clothes stolen (at least in the area of the world your headed to), but be sure to lock up or keep on you anything valuable. If there's not a locker or it's shady I'll sleep with my valuables - not the best of bed companions, but better than having them gone

Great info, everyone. I didn't think about the lockers being too small for my backpack so that's a good thing to think about as far as what I would put in there. Guess when I'm out during the day I would have my camera and money with me so there might not be much worth protecting. I also think it's a good idea to keep things neat when you are staying with other people (heck, even when I'm in a hotel room I don't throw things all over). That's interesting about the assigned beds, too.

How about if I hang my clothesline (when I'm in the bottom bunk) with my washed underwear??
