Is Sydney definitely the best place for a European to start a world tour?
Is the hostel/backpacker thing definitely stronger there than the US?

Hi Marcus,

I am not sure why you have assumed that?!? Considering it is the furthest place away from UK/Europe i dont see why it would be the best place to start travelling....... Unless you intend to work your way backwards?

3 years ago, i started my travels in HK and this year I am starting in NY. It really depends on the type of ticket you purchase i guess. Ideally i would guess that u want to do a kinda 'loop', rather than flying directly to OZ to start. Only my thoughts though! :)

Where's the best place for an english-speaking person looking to start world tour to settle in?

There is no such thing as the best place, but when starting a RTW trip it might be good to start somewhere where travelling around on your first days is relatively easy. Australia is good of course, but South East Asia is another part of the world to start, before flying further to Oz and/or Nz. For example Hong Kong or Bangkok. HK is especially convenient as most people speak english and you can travel through southern china and vietnam and cambodia before reaching Thailand/Bangkok. No need to travel from Bangkok north and back again. Just a thought, but there are many examples.
Fly to Moscow for example and take the train to China.
