I have been reading different things regarding the Perhentian Islands - everyone has said they are beautiful and should not be missed but I have also heard that alcohol is not widely sold and drinking is frowned upon is this true?. Drinking is not everything to me its just that our plans have us spending a few days there on my birthday and well I would love nothing more than just being able to lay out all day drinking a few beers and enjoying growing another day older with my mates, so if we have to plan another stop over somewhere to do this then we will push the perhentian islands off by a few days.
And also what do people think of Boracay in the Philliphines?
alcohol is not widely sold but you will definitely be able to find a little bar to have a few drinks in on your birthday. It's fine to drink in these places and isn't really frowned upon as such on the islands, it's just that as this area of the country has stronger Muslim beliefs than other areas and alcohol is not part of their culture. it's also fine to take your own alcohol on to the islands- we took a bottle of spirits when we went.
When I was there in 2002 and 2003 I found that alcohol was not too easy to come by and was pretty expensive when offered. Maybe things are changing now. I felt that it was frowned upon, as it is a Muslim island, however like in so many other places, in the name of making a buck from tourists, locals will often forget about their principals. This always saddens me, and I feel that out of respect for the people who's home you are visiting, you should refrain from taking part in things that go against their cultural values. Just my opinion.
I will add though that even as a normally pretty hearty drinker, I loved the Perhentians and I think they are well worth a visit.
thanks guys, i will definetly be visiting the islands just will change the dates from we do.
