Hello Rick,
I have been around C.A. once last year. You could drive from the USA to Panama in about 7 days. So I would definitely say its possible! But of course thats with your own vehicle. My favorite place in C.A was Costa Rica. So make sure you spend enough time there! Monte Verde is awesome! and theres a mountain right outside (70 mi) of San Jose and I heard it was really cool. In Honduras theres a place called Valle De Angels. Its supposed to be beautiful but I didn't get a chance to check it out. In Nicaragua theres a massive lake (can't remmember the name) with an Island has two Volcano's on it! its near a small town called Rivas. Very nice place to visit. The coast of Honduras is also very pretty. but the capital is very poor and not a whole lot to see.
I hope this helps you some! Let me know if you have any more questions bout C.A.!;)

I would make the effort to get to Panama! A very beautiful country with lots to see! You can even sail to Colombia and go Island hopping on the way in the Carabean for around $200usd, some thing I wish I had done. If you think you would be interested pm me. There are also some nice things to see in Guatemala, but there was a lot of violence there last year. Like volcan Pacaya is cool you can look right in the top of an active volcanlo, that's near amatitlan!
i'll post more later.

my friends and i took countless busses from quito ecuador to texas in three months so you can make it from honduras to cost rica in 3 to 4 weeks. i once made it from antigua quatemala to the u.s. border in 44 hours by bus. i dont recommend much of honduras other then copan but spend as much time as you can in nic. costa rica is gorgeous but kind of americanized in areas. the island with the volcanos is isla de ometepe and i spent a week there. totally worth checking out. have fun and be safe

Honduras to Costa Rica is possible in your time frame. Buses are pretty frequent between the major cities, even internationally.

For things to do, if you like to dive or are looking for some beach relaxation time, than the Bay Islands of Utila and Roatan are worth a visit. The Copan Ruins are supposedly very nice, and not something you would be able to see in Costa Rica.

Enjoy.
