Leaving Scotland on July 12th to visit Oz for a year on a WHV, starting in Melbourne.
Wonder if folks could give me a few pointers....
I've read previously and know that i'll need to open a bank account and get a tax file number, i'm just wondering how easy and quick it is to do this?
Is there anything else i'll need to do within the first few weeks that i'm missing out on? Just trying to get myself organised now
Bank account is easy - opening within 6 weeks of arrival the only identity document you need is your passport as this will fulfil the 100-point check. You also need an address in Australia (which can be a mail-holding address).
I believe you can apply for your TFN online and you get it about 2-3 weeks later.
The other thing is getting a Medicare Card which will be under the Reciprocal Healthcare Agreement. Head to a Medicare office for this and they'll point you to the right form to complete!
Should you be looking at signing up with the medicare health system asap ? ( when i say you i mean me as well ) ??
Since your in Scotland /UK contact Bank of Scotland as they own Bankwest an Australian bank you maybe able to open an account before getting here, even link them.
Thanks for clearling that up guys, i'll definately have a word with the Bank of Scotland, would be useful if I could do that.
Am I right in thinking that I can't work until I have a Tax File Number which should take a few weeks after arriving?
If you have applied for a TFN you can work, however you'll need to supply the TFN to your employer as soon as you get it. Each time you start work for an employer you complete a TFN Declaration form, the 1st question is for your TFN - there is an option here to select if you have made an application for a TFN, so if it is the case that you start work while waiting for the TFN you've applied for you just select that box on the form!
While there is nothing wrong with Bank West you should note that they are only a small bank. A result is that they have a limited number of branches. If you have to use a card issued by them in a non Bank West ATM you will have to pay a fee - about $1.50 or so I believe. This could get expensive.
You would be better to wait until you arrive and open an account with one of the 4 major banks - ANZ, Commonwealth, National or Westpac. A backpacker staying with us set up an ANZ account without any trouble. He just needed a passport and, to get a debit card needed to put a minimum of $100 in. the card arrived within a week.
Have a great holiday.
Thanks again guys,
Very helpful. Glad i've got those problems cleared up....

7-Eleven stores often have Bank West ATM's located in them, so although there may be fewer branches outside of WA there are quite a few ATM's available.
