You can do the journey by rail down to Reggio de Calabria, from where you would catch a ferry to Messina in Sicily, though you will most likely have to change somewhere down the length of the country, most obviously in Rome. Check this site for train times and fares:

Trenitalia

I should add that English speakers can usually travel OK in Italy. I have never been south of Naples so I don't know how it is there. Many Italian rail staff speak English (and French) and the fares are usually quite reasonable.

From Nice to Sicily its a very long train journey. The best way would be IMO to go all the way back to Paris and catch a flight from Paris to Sicily.

Or go to Pisa or Milano and catch a flight down to Sicily. Ryanair and easyjet have cheap offers.

A third possibility would be to go by ferry. From Genova is easiest; this isn't exactly the quickest option though, nor is it likely to be the cheapest.

Do you know how many hours from Reggio de Calabria to Messina by ferry?

Sorry, I don't. From having been to Italy last October, I know that the train I took from Rome to Naples continued to Reggio de Calabria. This is the only information link I can find:Messina - Reggio which says that services are run by state railways.

This website gives details of the services mentioned by Bentivolgi: Viamare
