A couple of Travel Guide Questions

Travel Forums System Talk A couple of Travel Guide Questions

Hi Guys,

I am just doing some research on a couple of countries and was scanning through the travel guide here.

A couple of things I was wondering:

First up kudos to those who put it together. I am finding the information on hand very will put together in terms of titles and sections.

1 The one aspect that I see lacking in most of the city guides is sleep. There's very little information about places to stay in the city guides. I am sitting here with 7 tabs open looking at hostel sites and writing down addresses etc. I know the guide is user powered, but has anyone pushed for more information on places to stay to be written in?

(or maybe I am just a lay bugger about doing my own research!!)

2 Is there a way to print off the country or city guide? Like you can with the blog? I am copying and pasting snip its for my own reference and am find most stuff is actually good enough to pack along with me.

3 What does the Feature button actually do?

I have made my own contributions to the Travel Guide, and was doing it more because of places I liked that had not much written on them. But in doing my own research for up coming trips I am really finding it quite valuable, so well done again TP.

No pushes yet in that section. It's actually quite a tricky one, because it's very hard for one editor to make recommendations about an entire town. There are some plans floating around to make this section somewhat automated and tied into the TP accommodation area. That way we can take advantage of reviews and ratings to automatically show only the most popular places for each location. Only thing is, in order to do that, we need to first ramp up the number of properties in our accommodation area to be a LOT more comprehensive.

Yep, just use your browser's print feature or click on the Print link at the bottom of each article. We have created a special stylesheet, so it will remove a lot of the surrounding navigation etc. It should print out fairly nicely.

3 What does the Feature button actually do?

Because you are a Respected Member of TP, you are automatically also a "moderator" of sorts in the Travel Guide. The feature option can be used to feature a particularly complete/well-written article. That will show the article on this page. It will also lock the article, so that only Full Members and above will be able to edit it. In other words, only do this if the article is really good and usually it's best to first start a topic about featuring it in the "Discuss" section of the article.

That's excellent. It's been up pretty much exactly a year now, so it's great to see the value really start to develop. It's come along in leaps and bounds, although there's obviously still plenty left to write about :)

Would it really be necessary to have that much more information available to 'seed' the sleep area? I think the hardest part with this is if you'd want to keep the properties tied to the accommodation area. One thing I was thinking is that you could have some custom snippets of code that when inserted brought in say 5-10 hostels or budget hotels (guess the highest rated). In cities where isn't any accommodation, the properties could be added by hand much like happens today. And if you wanted to add more than already showed you could add them in the accommodation area maybe which would mean the guide would automatically update? I realize it means actually 'wikifying' the accom side of things but it would be quite neat if property info was automatically pulled into the guides!

Yes, I think it would be if it is going to be any real use at all. Or at least a way for users to add those properties in, as you suggest. And they would need to be added into our general accommodation area too, so they can be rated and reviewed just like the "bookable" properties. Either way, it's not going to happen overnight the way I see it.
