Konnichiwa,

Well, the trip's getting super close... less than a week to go, and I'm trying to figure out if this itinerary is feasible (a side note: we have a JR Rail Pass)

Our main base of operations will be Kyoto... and we would very much like to visit Himeji, but I've been reading up on Nara and it seems that it would be a nice place to go as well. Seeing as how many people say that Himeji could be covered in 2 hours, I was wondering if I can add Nara as part of the day trip? I realize that it takes practically 2 hours of the day to go from Kyoto to Himeji and back, and an additional hour to go to Nara which would only work if we did Himeji in the AM and Nara in the PM.

Is this reasonable or too hectic? Or should I opt for the more on-the-way-back to Kyoto cities such as Kobe and Kyoto. We'll only be in the Kansai region for a total of 2 full days with the other day dedicated to all of Kyoto's sights.

Thank you in advance.

I would say if you only have two days in the region, then skip Nara. Nara is really nice, but I think with the exception of Todaiji (which is pretty awesome) it doesn't have too much that Kyoto doesn't have. Kyoto has so much to see that 2 days isn't enough at all, so don't waste one of those days on trains getting to other places.

I agree - I would skip Nara and concentrate on Kyoto. I spent 5 days there as there is loads to see.
