motorbike through africa - best bike survey

Travel Forums Africa and The Middle East motorbike through africa - best bike survey

Hey all ,

I've become obsessed with this foolish idea (long before Euan McGregor completed this in between his 5 star hotel stays) but first I would need an appropriate bike (without blowing the budget on the starting line). I went to see BMW today and they showed me a bike that costs R170K !!! and looks like a space rocket - GS 1200 Adventure - is this really what I need ??

If anyone has done some serious African travel through rough terrain and sand especially whilst fully loaded, please leave your opinion here for me to dwell on....

Many thanks ,

Nev

Damn I am seriously jealous....

HAve a read of Jonny Bealby's book Running with the Moon it's a nice read and covers a few more practical aspects of African motorbike travel.

Personally I would not spend 170k on a bike to travel africa. Depending on where you are going I think it will draw a lot of attention that you will be getting anyway. Lets not Forget MR. McGregor and co did have a huge support base behind them.

Also take a look at this site www.horizonsunlimited.com its a motorbike forum with many people planning the same style trip, or with tips on how they just accomplished a similar one.

Good luck with your plan, hopefully we will see a good blog of your adventures!!

Hi Nev, Check out this site too: www.africa-overland.net. This is a great site, or portal as they call it, compiling independent overland travel sites. You will find past trips by truck, car, motor bike, bike & foot for Africa...and the world. There is even one chick out there who is "driving" from the Netherlands to Antarctica through Africa on a tractor, see www.tractortractor.org (btw, three years later she's made it to ZA!) Often these sites will have detailed descriptions of their vehicles. There is one lady, lois on the loose, who made the journey through Africa on a Yamaha TTR250. Most people heavily modify their ride. You will find tons of route information by checking out the sites as well. Good luck!
