Carrying your backpack

Travel Forums Australia / New Zealand & The Pacific Carrying your backpack

Alright people, seeing as i have never "backpacked" before, I had some questions.
My main question is for example when I am exploring Sydney, staying is hostels do I need to bring my full, big backpack around with me or is there somewhere secure where i can store it. This leads to what to do while on the road; what are you guys doing with it while you travel, or do you have to keep your eyes on it every second? for example if i bring it to the beach and want to go swimming for a bit should i ALWAYS keep an eye on it? any advice/tips would be helpful.

There will be a place in the hostel where you can lock up valuables, usually a small locker per person. Some of the better hostels have huge lockers where you can fit your whole backpack. Bring along a couple of padlocks for these, as you usually have to either have your own, or hire one from the reception.
So during the day, pop your valuables in there, and lock it up, or there may be a place at reception where you can stash your passport.
Then if you have your valuables stored away, or in your daypack, you should be good to leave your big pack in the room at the hostel. Lock it up with padlocks, and i also bring a chain or backpack wire, and put it through the pack, and wrap the wire around the bed frame, so it cant be stolen. Thats only if you are really worried about your clothes etc.
If you are going to the beach where you are likely to leave your belongings to go in for a surf or swim, just take a small bag with only your towel and clothes etc. Dont take anything that important, as yeah, you will have to leave your stuff. Keep a wee eye out for your things, but if you dont have anything too important, as there is always a chance it will 'disappear.'!
Get some boardshorts with a good pocket with velcro all along the top of it, and you can stash your money in it even while you are swimming. Obviously leave your passport and any large sums of money at the hostel. You can get wallets made of wetsuit fabric which i find to be quite good. otherwise just take a really small amount of money and leave it in your bag, you wont need much on the beach.
Let me know if i can be of any help:):)
