i stayed in Toad Hall which i really liked. I also stayed in Base, st kilda, but this is more of a party place.

Never stayed there myself, but have heard good reports of the Nunnery and drove past it many times, because it's in a very centrally located, popular neighbourhood of Melbourne (Fitzroy) and there's heaps of great caf├ęs, bars, restaurants and a park nearby.

umm there's one on elizabeth st right near the train station and maccas. Nice rooms and reasonable price
Flinders station hotel backpackers or something. Seemed pretty popular, safe, nice girls at the counter, movie areas, internet, free brekky. google it

Lord's lodge. It's nice and cozy, very comfortable. It's a house with about 20 or 30 people living in it and everyone tends to get to know each other. Most of the time you find people that have been there for months at a time.

it's in prahran (did I spell that right?) 5 minutes from the train statio. ten minute train ride from Fletcher street station.

anyway it's with out a doubt the nicest hostel I've stayed at so far in australia! I had a better time at ones in sydney, and airlie but that was because of the people.

if you're looking for a central location (rather than st kilda) you could try nomads industry. it's pretty new and very flash!
