Yes, I know I've left it really late in organising a booking! I only decided I wanted to go to Peru two weeks ago,
Does anyone know of any operators who still have availability any time throughout July or August?
If so please let mw know - I will be eternally gratefully!
Is there ever any possibility of getting on the trek with out booking and just turning up? ie getting someone elses cancellation etc?
Although it would be excellent to do the actual inca trail trek, which other routes come recommended if the inca trail is not possible.
Thanks in advance
There's more information in the Machu Picchu article in the Travel Guide.

My cousin had the same frustration just a month ago. For sure, there is not any chance to book for the IT until mid october. Nevertheless...(word that brings a spark of hope), nevertheless I got in touch with some friends in Peru and they suggested me to tell my cousin to try the Salkantay Trail (sorry if I misspelled). Jose, my friend, says it will take one more day than the IT and the hiking takes you up to the 3.000 + meter mark, but he says is much more spectacular. You must overnight camp for 3 nights but on the fourth you get to sleep in a hotel in Agua Caliente (the village at the foot of MP). On the fifth day you bus up to MP very early to void the tourist swarms. The price is almost the same as the IT. If you are interested contact check the peruinteract tours site.
im in the same problem as you im plainning to go south america in aug and really wanna get to peru!!!
Who cares if the main "Inca Trail" is booked up solid, which it probably is. There are plenty of alternatives that are just as breathtaking.
I would do a quick search on the Salkantay Trail and look into booking a trek. The Inca's didn't have one trail. It was a network of trails all over the Incan Empire.
The "Inca Trail" that everyone knows is just one of many. It is also heavily used and fairly crowded. Sure you see more ruins, but you will see just as much beautiful scenery on the Salkantay and you still end up in the same place... Machu Picchu.
well i have jsut booked a flight from Costa Rica to Peru (return) but now im woundering should i wait till i get to Cuzco to book a trip to MP or book it now???????????? HELP!!!
Hey! It's definitely sure that the original Inca Trail is fully booked until mid-October. The tickets are issued centrally and whichever agency comes first ang gets the tickets, has them for their clients. So it's not worth it writting to different agencies asking for availability, there will always be the same response. - fully booked until October.
However I did an alternative trek to get to Machu Picchu a month ago and it was just amazing. It was Salkantay - Machu Picchu for 5 days and the agency was called Land Adventures - based in Arequipa. If you're running out of time and want to do a shorter trek, they have shorter treks too and all of them will bring you to Machu Picchu at the end of the programme.
The service was excellent, the food good, the guide spoke English and we didn't have to carry all our equipment, just the personal stuff, the rest was carried by horses.
Have a look on their website -snip-
Hope that will help you!
[ Edit: Sorry, no promos please. ]
