I would take the names of some companies and hold off until I got there. Unless you are extremely stuck for time. It's usually a lot cheaper when you get there, and you can meet with the people.

Having said that it adds a little pressure to you as you need to find them quickly once you land. Hence a few telephone calls pretending to be in country already might help;) Use the time you see them as an excuse to get to know the city. Also your hotel will probably have contacts.

i, too, think you'll be fine booking once you arrive. research your options now online and do a little recon work so you have an idea of who you want to be looking up when you get there. as for rafting in vic falls, you'll have no problems there. if you're on the vic falls side, shearwaters adventures is the main outfitter and can hook you up with everything from bungee jumps to rafting to helicopter rides. you'll have no problems there.

Hey Cat,

September is peak/getting into peak season up in Luangwa so I'd look into trying to organise something before I get there, or at least try and find out what availablity will be like around the time you'll be there.

Livingstone (Vic Falls) shouldn't be a problem I reckon you'll be able to get accomodation when you get there. I know that there is a backpackers in town which is pretty reasonable, but if you there is also a place called the waterfront which is right on the river, they have chalets or if you want something cheaper they have camping tents with beds in! I have stayed there and its great. They've got a restuarant/bar there too so its all pretty convenient.

The weather is fantastic in September, very hot, and getting into October is hot and windy!!

I hope you have a great time!

Consider booking your canoe safari early. I would start in Livingstone. Do the canoeing next with Zambia Lower Zambezi Canoe Safaris -- River Horse Safaris They will arrange transportation from Livingstone to the river and then from the river to Lusaka. I wouldn't wait till the last because Sept is a popular month and you may not get to go when you want. I like their Great Zambezi Canoe Safari because of the area it covers-the length of LZNP. The other ones go through the Game Management areas = hunting, villages and less wildlife.

From Lusaka you can fly to Mufwe if that is your budget. There are budget moderate choices at Mfuwe to upmarket. After that, you can do a safari up to North Luangwa. I can recommend something here, if that is of interest to you. It would be more classified in the budget to moderate range. Rarely visited bush camps.

If you don't do this in advance, you may find yourself sitting around alot till a tour starts. Long way to fly for that.

And if there is still time, you can do an extension to Kafue NP.

It is the transportation issues that kill late planning in Zambia. You can't just hop on a plane at the last minute.
