Hi,

I stayed in a couple of places in Santiago in January, the best was Hostal Forestal. Its one of the most random hostels I have stayed in when travelling - its just like being at home. Friendly, great fun, amazing bbq and beers.

Its listed on the lonely planet site, here are the main details:

Address:

Coronel Santiago Bueras 120
Santiago CHILE

Neighbourhood: Centro
Atmosphere: Backpacker - Upmarket and Party
Price Range: Budget

Hey,

I stayed a night in Santiago before boarding a bus to Arica the next day. Stayed in a place called EcoHostel Santiago. I'm not sure in exactly which area it was located, but I knew that it wasn't far and the bus terminal was only a metro ride away. Very convenient.

The area was nice and quiet, the hostel i must say was a bit like a kindergarten due to the colours and paintings on the walls, but they have really really clean rooms and it's really quiet (useful especially before a long bus trip to San Pedro de Atacama!). Price was reasonable for a dorm bed, although we had the whole room to ourselves pretty much.

If you are looking for somewhere close to the bus station, I would recommend either of the following:

Casa Roja or HI Santiago. Both are located in the Barrio Brasil and are a short cab or bus ride to the bus station. There is a good atmosphere in both hostels, and when I was there in 2006, they cost approx US$12 a night for a dorm room.

HI Hostel in calle Cienfuegos would be fine. Close to the bus station, very clean and cheap.
Parque Forestal is a nice area to be around a couple of evenings enjoying the cafes and shops.

Have a fun trip!

I liked Hostal London. Lots of rooms, central location. Free wifi, breakfast included. Tv...But just Spanish TV...El Chavo is on though. THey had a book exchange...I don't think there was a kitchen to use. The desk folks all speak English and are damned helpful.
