I'm hesitant to hijack this thread as it's really intended for design related changes, but will quickly answer a few of the things raised. We can split this off into a separate thread if there's more to discuss there.

  • A more user friendly way of adding photographs to the blogs. Currently, there is a single select drop down that shows a big preview of the picture. One, this makes adding a lot of photos very tedious and two, if we're on a slow connection (which is often while traveling) it makes it even more tedious. We'd like to see a thumbnail selection feature similar to the upload fuctionality, where you can choose multiple photos based on the thumbnails, click ok, and then the links are inserted in bulk into the blog.

  • When photos are displayed in a blog, make them links to the high resolution img in the public gallery. Also, make a popup text of the description of the photo from the public gallery.

  • The save draft while typing feature doesn't always work as we'd expect and we often lose work. We'd rather see a feature that reminds you to save as draft if you try to navigate away from an entry that has been edited since the last save.

TLWH was mentioning the photo inserting earlier too. I'll start working on that now that we launched public blog commenting last week and that's off my plate. If you don't mind I might ask the two of you for ideas once I've got something fleshed out?

The linking to a high res option is already available in some form. If you insert thumbnails, a link is created to a pop up that when clicked on also includes the description of the photo from the public gallery. Maybe that should apply to all photos though, not just thumb size (that was done back in the day when the max size of an uploaded photo was much smaller than today).

Have you noticed any consistency in the Save Draft not working? It should always work, but some internet cafes or browsers might have an issue with it.

Low bandwidth bloggers. I know I am often trying to do things from low bandwidth countries or connections. And I found in the past some things just didn't function right. Photo uploader and the map for one. I know one could use the single upload for the photos, and the map is as it is.

Not a priority right now, although we get closer and closer to this the more people talk about mobile being the next big thing... If I'm not mistaken the problem in the past with both the photo uploader and maps has been flash. The photo uploader no longer is and should really be quite robust. The maps are still flash, but without giving too much away, someone is working on converting those to something else....

However, I've also noticed that even if you have that unticked yet have the photo tagged with "me" your photo still shows up in the Travel Guide if you've edited a large percentage of that item.

That sounds like a bug. It should basically duplicate the way it works on the profile pages.

I now allocate this thread back to intended use; design related ideas/thoughts

Ok, we've got a new alternative. Version 3

Changes:

  • Back to the old logo, albeit cropped to fit a smaller size. We're still pondering tweaks to the logo, but we'll try to keep the character still i place.
  • New logo text. Actually, I had some other previous drafts with this font. For some reason, it just works for me, but see what you think.
  • Action buttons back in place with consistent icons. Note: they may not be the final icons, but they're probably a better style.

Some things have been left out to make this work:

  • Activity Bar (this will find its way back - we're quite keen on it)
  • The login / signup prompts are not front and center. Not sure whether we need to worry about that. Pushing members to register too much can also be a negative thing. There's a lot they can do on the site without ever registering after all.

That's all for now. It's certainly not final, so please let us know your reactions. As you can see, we are taking them very seriously.

Re version 3.

I am actually liking the new Logo man and New logo text

Not sure if the "s" and "p" are hard to distinguish, might just be me though. But I do like. Wonder what another shade of color would do?

Just one other point I could help see. Not sure if what your overall goal is in TP, bring in new members? If so, the idea of having a travel blog or starting one on TP doesn't jump out at me on that version 3 image?

It looks very community based, which is good, but if pushing new bloggers to sign up? I'm not seeing it personally. Then again could be me!

But the more I look at the new logo and text I like very much. Great job.

No problems. Happy to give my 2 cents. Am subscribed on this thread or just DM.

The V3 logo is a nice compromise, what's it like using tradition blue colour instead of the grey? Sort of reminds me of the old Paddy Palins logo. The action buttons are an improvement... not sure about the graphic on the right, are there any other options for this space? (moving collage of sorts of very attractive travel photos??)

That was actually meant to be the same blue we currently have. It's just getting lost in the PNG saving process for some reason. I've just updated with a version that I darkened and saturated in Photoshop a bit more to make it more like what it should be. It's definitely still meant to feel blue. The reason for having that colour at the top is to ensure that we don't lose too much of our character while making this change.

I'm personally growing very fond of the illustration in that spot. It adds a certain colour that we just don't have otherwise and to me it also sends a lot of the right messages. A definite hippy feel, which just feeds into the good vibes we want everyone to feel on the site ;) (something they often miss until they have spent some time browsing the forums). We might however get a version made tailored to that spot and maybe with the Travellerspoint VW bus in it instead (see scribble blog template). It's definitely still open for discussion though.

Good point. The "share" word is meant to be that, but it really doesn't say that clearly enough I guess. Maybe we just need to make it "Blog". In terms of our goals - yes, bringing in new members is always a goal. It's the lifeblood of the site to have lots of people active answering questions, so that's always a priority. I'm glad you're catching the "community" sense. That's one of the important things we're trying to achieve!

I'm not convinced by the font in the logo - I think it's mainly the letter r for me, which looks like a backward r if that makes sense! To me it just makes it a little messy, but certainly a font similar to that could work for me.

The other thing I don't like in this version is the "Join us" which because of it's size is effectively the title of the page. I'm not sure you even need anything in larger text there above the "We're a community of independent..."

The final thing I just noticed - is there a reason the top and bottom bars are wider than the content in between? Looks a little odd.

The header and footer will both stretch across the entire width of the screen, with the main content centred in the middle.

Other points taken. :)

A man after my own heart.

A TP Microbus would be very cool but then, I'm also a fan of the Scribbles template for just that reason - the VW bus. I agree with Peter that the graphic adds color which isn't a bad thing. It's eye-catching. I do find the icons to the left to be very simplistic, actually dull, in comparison. But, as you mentioned, Peter, they may not be the final choices.

Otherwise, it's blending old and new nicely. Really do like the logo font because it's a "warm" design. The font used with Stickman" was a "cool" (as in cold) font and not as inviting or pleasing to the eye. Though, I do see the new font to be more appealing to older visitors rather than younger ones.

(There's a big movement to ban the use of comic sans because it's used so often in every form of media. Probably best to avoid trying it on for size.)

I like how everyone has difficulties with a different letter in the new logo. For me, it reads as Travellerspaint. Which I think is an exciting new direction into which to take the site, with lots of possibility for synergy and other buzzwords. ^_^

I don't think these new icons are quite it yet (the bed in particular was "huh?", probably halfway because of the reflecction, I agree that "Share" should be "Blog", and I kinda miss the "it" behind the words), but they are very much on the right track as far as general style and coherence goes. (Though at the same time I do kinda miss the screenshots of the map and the blogs from v1; maybe you could do something with that on hover for each of the sections? (replace the graphic on the right perhaps??))
Not certain if "Join us" is better than "We're Travellerspoint". Don't have any brilliant ideas for what would be better, though.

Ok, slight update on the font. Still in the handwriting style, but with clearer characters.
